They merge as among the top professional career and perhaps glamor to the eyes of their surroundings. More than meets the eye…agreed! With their creativity mind and technical knowledge skills, we lived comfortably and helped improve our well-being. But what do it takes to become a civil engineer?
Whoever interested to become a civil engineer must undergo typically 4 years of Civil Engineering course in Degree of academic level. The civil students will learn all the required subjects and will apply it in the future when graduated. The knowledge they obtained (in terms of theoretical and practical) would be use in practicing civil engineering. During the period of studies they will acquire subjects like Engineering Mathematics, Surveying, Engineering Drawing, Computer Application, Geology, Geotechnical, Materials, Fluid Mechanics, Soil Mechanics, Hydraulics, Hydrology, Environmental, Water and Waste-water, Road and Highway, Structural, Design of Reinforced Concrete / Steel / Timber, Construction Contract and Management, Estimation, Economy, Building Services, and compulsory Final Year Project.
Civil Engineer
In civil engineering, engineers hold various position of their job which respects to the field their involved in – structural, geotechnical, transportation, environmental, water resources or construction. Most commonly used title for the engineers would be like Site engineer, Lab engineer, Project engineer, Design engineer, Junior engineer, and so on.
Where would they normally like to work? Well this may depends on their interest of knowledge, experience, salary wise or pleasant workplace, and sometimes luck. Most engineers preferred joining the private sectors for more challenging situation, either with consultant firm doing design project or the contractor that requires more hands-on project. Others preferred working for government sectors which ranging from states to federal agencies. Other areas in which civil engineers could work would be in sales, teaching, and research.
Civil engineers responsibility would be planning, designing, constructing and managing essential to ensure the success of construction project. They acted as problem solvers, analytical thinker, confronting the challenges of pollution, traffic congestion, drinking water and energy needs, urban restructuring and community planning.
As the rapid advancement of technology, the world’s population increases, and environmental concerns mount, civil engineering skills will be needed throughout the world. The future demand for civil engineers will remain strong and must-have. No matter what area you choose, either be in design, construction, research, planning, teaching or management, civil engineering offers you a broad variety of career choices. And there’s no edge to the personal satisfaction you will feel from helping to make our precious planet a superior place to live.
